The Holy Martyr John the Soldier
Martyr
Saint John served as a soldier during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate.
Despite the persecutions and his position in the army, he secretly helped Christians, warning them of impending danger and freeing many who had been arrested. He showed mercy to the persecuted and the poor. He prayed and fasted, visited the sick, and comforted those in need.
Having lived a virtuous life, he departed peacefully to the Lord. His body was buried in the Pandektes, the place where strangers and travelers were laid to rest. Later, a woman spoke of his deeds and of his holy character, while many miracles began to be performed in his name.
The Church celebrates his memory on July 29.
