Presbyter
Saint John Rumyantsev was born in 1889 in the village of Karchino, Makaryevsky district, Kostroma province. Since 1914, he served as a deacon in the Reshemsky Monastery, and in 1923 he was ordained as a priest. After the monastery was closed, he served in the church of the village of Voskresenskoye in the Kineshma district of the Ivanovo Industrial region.
In 1929, he was arrested on charges of anti-Soviet agitation. When questioned by the investigator, he replied that he did not consider himself guilty and did not succumb to pressure. On January 3, 1929, he was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in a concentration camp. After returning home in 1933, he settled in the village of Vozdvizhenskoye in the Navoloksky district of the Ivanovo region.
In February 1936, he was arrested again, along with Father Konstantin Razumov. At the trial, Father John remained courageous and steadfast, not admitting his guilt. On July 5, 1937, he was sentenced to five years of corrective labor camp.
The exact date of the martyr's death of Priest John Rumyantsev is unknown, but he is believed to have died in the camp around 1937, unable to endure the inhumanly harsh conditions of the detention of prisoners. He was canonized among the new martyrs and confessors of Russia in August 2000 at the Archdiocesan Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
