Metropolitan Bishop
He was born in 1651 in Nizhyn to the family of Maxim Vasilyevich and Yevfrosiniya. He graduated from the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and became a teacher of Latin. In 1680, he took monastic vows in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, deepening his inner spiritual life. In 1685, he was appointed as the abbot of the Bryansk Svyensky Monastery.
In 1695, Archbishop Theodosius of Chernihiv appointed him as the archimandrite of the Chernihiv Elets Monastery. He received healing from illness through the prayers of Saint Theodosius. On January 10, 1697, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Chernihiv.
He established a Collegium at the Chernihiv episcopal see, which became the first seminary in Russia. He opened a printing house, publishing spiritual writings. His life was filled with humility and virtues.
In 1711, he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan and arrived at the Tobolsk and All Siberia see. He cared for the enlightenment of the diocese, continuing the work of missionary activity. He sent a mission to Beijing and published the "Iliotropion" in Slavic-Russian.
He served the people, providing assistance to those in need. He died on June 10, 1715, leaving behind a good memory. In 1916, a nationwide celebration was established on the day of his repose.
