Ignatios of Constantinople
Holy Hierarch
Patriarch
Patriarch
Saint Ignatius was the son of Emperor Michael Rangabe and Empress Prokopia, the brother of Theophilus and the grandson of Emperor Nicephorus. At the age of fifteen, he was confined to a monastery and became the abbot of the Archangel Monastery, which later was called Satyr. Ignatius was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople and held this position for 11 years and 5 months until he was deposed by Emperor Michael. Instead of him, Photios, a former simple monk, was appointed. After the deposition of Photios, Ignatius again became Patriarch for 10 years, but was again exiled by Emperor Nicephorus. His place was taken by Saint Stephen, and Ignatius withdrew to the Satyr Monastery, where he passed away at the age of eighty-nine.
