Martyr
Martyr Iakov Ivanovich Gortinsky was born in 1899 and lived in the village of Gnilytsy in the Avtozavodsky district of the city of Gorky. He worked as a mechanic at a hospital. In August 1937, he was arrested on charges of “participating in a church counter-revolutionary group” along with the venerable martyr Anna (Yezhova). He did not admit his guilt. On August 21, 1937, by the Special Troika of the NKVD of the Gorky region, he was sentenced to death and executed on August 29, buried in an unmarked grave. He was glorified by the Archierarchical Jubilee Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in the year 2000.
