During the persecutions of Christians under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian in the city of Edessa, two friends, Christians Gury and Samon, who preached the Word of God, were captured. They refused to offer sacrifices to the gods and were subjected to terrible tortures: they were beaten, hung by their hands, and thrown into prison. At night, the martyrs were beheaded, and the Christians buried their holy bodies. Later, under Emperor Licinius, a deacon of the Edessa church named Aviv, wishing to save other Christians, came to the executioners himself and was burned. His body remained unharmed, and he was buried next to Gury and Samon.
After the death of the saints, numerous miracles occurred. A Gothic warrior, who had deceived his wife Euphemia, subjected her to humiliation. She prayed to the holy martyrs, and the Lord miraculously transported her to Edessa. When the perjurer was sent to serve in Edessa again, his crime was revealed, and he was executed.
The holy martyrs Gury, Samon, and Aviv are known as the protectors of marriage and a happy family. They are prayed to for protection from hatred and evil in marriage.
