Saint Gregory was born on November 18, 1891, in the Vyatka province to a peasant family of Prokopy Smirnov. In 1911, he graduated from the second-class school at the Kazan church in the village of Stary Tor'yel, and in 1913, he was appointed a psalmist at the Kazan church in the village of Gorokhova. In 1916, he moved to serve in the Perm diocese, and on January 15, 1917, Bishop Andronic of Perm ordained him as a deacon at the Nikolayevsky church in the village of Mokino. In December 1918, Deacon Gregory Smirnov was shot by godless Bolsheviks and stabbed with bayonets.
