Archbishop
Our holy father Gregory loved Christ from a young age and adorned himself with virtues. After the death of Pope Alexander of Alexandria, he was chosen as the Archbishop of Alexandria. Being an exemplary teacher of Orthodoxy, he demonstrated meekness, humility, and mercy, serving as an intercessor for widows and orphans, as well as a guide for the misguided and a healer for the sick.
However, the emperor Leo the Iconoclast, instigated by the devil, sent Gregory to Constantinople bound. The saint, upon learning of this, rebuked the emperor before the synod, calling him a heretic. For this, he was subjected to cruel tortures and imprisonment, but he endured everything with gratitude, saying: “For my Christ God and for the holy icon, I am even ready to be torn apart.” After living in captivity for three years, he surrendered his spirit into the hands of the Lord.
