Archimandrite
Boris Polyansky, the future archimandrite German, was born in the city of Tiraspol in 1901 in the family of a priest-missionary. In 1924, under the influence of Archbishop Bartholomew, he repented of his fascination with renovationist ideas. On March 17, 1926, in the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery, Boris received monastic tonsure with the name German. In 1932, he was ordained as a hieromonk, and later – as an archimandrite. Father German was a close assistant to Bishop Bartholomew and actively engaged in the spiritual environment of the youth.
In January 1933, he was arrested in connection with the 'Case of the Members of the Christian Youth Circle.' In 1936, he was convicted again and transferred to Siblag. While in captivity, he continued to secretly baptize and advocate for the imprisoned. In October 1937, he was accused of counter-revolutionary agitation and was shot on November 4. He was canonized among the ranks of the new martyrs and confessors of Russia in August 2000. It was later established that Priest Boris and Archimandrite German are the same person.
