Patriarch
Saint Gennadios, Patriarch of Constantinople, ascended to the throne after Saint Anatolios during the reign of the Emperor Leo the Great. He was distinguished for his gentle character, purity of spirit, and self-restraint.
During his time, there was built the church of Saint John the Forerunner, and the Monastery of Stoudios was founded. Saint Gennadios devoted himself to the strict observance of ecclesiastical order, requiring the clergy to possess an excellent knowledge of the Church typikon.
Saint Gennadios guided the Church with care and vigilance for thirteen years.
Shortly before his death, he received the grace of working miracles when, by making the sign of the Cross, he cast out a demon that had appeared before him. He prayed fervently for the salvation of the Church, while even after his death he continued to protect and watch over the faithful.
