The Archangel Gabriel was chosen by the Lord to announce to Theotokos the Incarnation of the Son of God. He served the mystery of humanity’s salvation and prophesied the coming of the Messiah.
He also appeared to Saint Anna and announced the birth of the Most Holy Theotokos, advising her to dedicate the young Mary to the Temple of Jerusalem. He prophesied the birth of John the Baptist and revealed the mystery of Incarnation to Saint Joseph. At the time of Christ’s prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the archangel gave Him strength. After Christ’s Resurrection, he announced the joyful news to the myrrh-bearing women.
The Orthodox Church holds the Archangel Gabriel in particular honor, regarding him as a protector and defender of humanity’s salvation. He is venerated for his zeal in fulfilling the will of God and for his intercession on behalf of all Christians.
