Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, was elevated to the patriarchal throne after the death of Saint Patriarch Proclus. At that time, the Church was suffering from turmoil and heresies. In 448, he convened a Local Council to condemn the heresy of Eutyches, who asserted one nature in Christ. Eutyches was excommunicated from the Church, but his protector Chrysaphus schemed and managed to convene a robber council in Ephesus, where Dioscorus condemned Flavian. The saint was brutally beaten and sentenced to exile, but the Lord called him to Himself. After his death, the relics of the saint were transferred to Constantinople through the efforts of the pious Empress Pulcheria.
