Filaret Ioannovich Velikanov was born on May 14, 1873, in the family of a deacon in the city of Verkhniy Lomov. He graduated from the Penza Theological Seminary and was appointed to the psalmist position at the cathedral church of the city of Nizhniy Lomov. From October 18, 1895, he served as a teacher at the Nizhniy Lomov Resurrection School. After being ordained as a deacon on May 25, 1896, he served in the Christ the Savior Church in the village of Surkino. In 1901, he was appointed as the economist of the Krasnoslobodsk Theological School.
On October 10, 1918, he was arrested on false charges and was in prison, where his situation was very difficult. On October 31, 1918, there was a record of his death in the journal of the Kazan Theological Academy.
In 2000, he was canonized among the all-Russian saints. His memory is celebrated on October 29/November 11, October 4(17), and on the day of the Assembly of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
