Metropolitan Bishop
He was born on April 17, 1779, in the village of Vysokoye, Orlov Province, to the family of Georgy Amfiteatrov. He received his education at the Orlov Spiritual School and Seminary, graduating in 1797. On November 7, 1798, he took monastic vows with the name Philaret. From 1802, he served as the rector of the Orlov-Sevsk Seminary, and later of the Ufa and Tobolsk Seminaries. In 1820, he was consecrated as Bishop of Kaluga and Borovsk, and subsequently served in Ryazan, Kazan, and Kyiv, where he became Metropolitan. In Kazan, he converted about five thousand indigenous people to Christianity and initiated the translation of liturgical texts into local languages.
He served at the Tobolsk Seminary, where he showed concern for the material well-being and education of the seminarians. In Kyiv, he paid special attention to the Lavra and became close to the hieroschemamonk Parthenius. A strict ascetic, he possessed the gift of spiritual guidance and healing. He took monastic vows in the great schema with the name Theodosius seventeen years before his death. He passed away on December 20, 1857, leaving behind a memory of virtues and wisdom. His memory is celebrated on December 20 and June 10.
