Metropolitan Bishop
Saint Eugenie, Metropolitan of Nizhny Novgorod, was born on January 18, 1877, in the Moscow province. In 1898, he graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary and entered the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1900, he was tonsured into monasticism with the name Eugenie, and in 1902, he was ordained as a hieromonk. From 1906, he served as the rector of the Irkutsk Theological Seminary. In 1913, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Kirensk. In 1914, he was appointed to the Primorsky and Blagoveshchensk diocese. In 1923, he was arrested and imprisoned, but after his release, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. In 1924, he was arrested again and sentenced to three years in a concentration camp. In 1937, he was sentenced to execution. On September 7 (20 according to the new style), 1937, he was shot. He was canonized among the ranks of the new martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church at the Jubilee Archpastoral Council in August 2000.
