Bishop
Mentioned in the Life of the Holy Martyrs Epictetus and Astion, where he is called the Evangelist. He baptized the parents of Astion, who had converted to Christianity, after his death. He is referred to as the bishop of the city of Tomis (Küstendje, now Constanța, Romania) by Archbishop Philaret (Gumilevsky), likely based on information from the Life of Epictetus and Astion, which states that the Evangelist was a bishop 'in Scythian land' (Little Scythia, modern Dobruja). It is possible that the Evangelist was the first or one of the first bishops of the city of Tomis. The Life does not mention his martyr's end. In the Greek synaxaries under July 7, there is a commemoration of the martyr Evangelist, who was beheaded, without details on the time and place of his death. It is unknown whether he is the same person as the Evangelist, bishop of Tomis.
