The Holy Martyr Dorotheus was born on 22 June 1869 in the village of Polukhtino in the Ryazan region. He grew up in a middle-class peasant family and worked as a shoemaker. He also served on the parish council.
In 1932, his property was confiscated because he was unable to pay the tax imposed on him. His wife, Vasiliki, his son, Vasily, and his daughter-in-law, Maria, who lived nearby, were subsequently forced to work on a collective farm.
The village chairman accused St Dorotheus of opposing the Soviet authorities, leading to his arrest on 27 September 1937. He denied all the charges against him. On the 6th of December 1937, by decision of the NKVD troika, the saint was sentenced to death.
