Saint Demetrius was born on February 5, 1869, in the village of Kuzminka, Serpukhov district of Moscow province. In 1899, he graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary and became a teacher at a parish school. In 1906, he was ordained as a priest, and in 1909, he was appointed the rector of the Annunciation Church in the village of Fedosino. After many years of service, he was elevated to the rank of protopresbyter.
Father Demetrius was known as a zealous priest. His wife, Olympiada Vasilievna, assisted him and treated the sick with herbs. In 1919, he was arrested by the Cheka but was soon released. In 1930, he was arrested again, but the charges were not proven. In 1936, surveillance began against the priest, and he was accused of anti-Soviet agitation.
On the night of August 8, 1937, Father Demetrius was arrested and imprisoned in Taganka prison. During interrogations, he denied all charges. On August 28, the NKVD troika sentenced him to execution. Protopresbyter Demetrius Ostrovumov was shot on August 30, 1937, and buried in an unmarked grave at the Butovo shooting range near Moscow.
