Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy was born in 1350 and was raised by Saint Alexis of Moscow. He was an outstanding statesman dedicated to the unification of Russian lands and the liberation of Russia from the Tatar-Mongol yoke. Before the decisive battle with the forces of Mamai, St. Dmitry asked for a blessing from the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, who sent him the help of monk-schemers Alexander and Andrew. For his victory on Kulikovo Field on the Feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, the prince came to be known as Donskoy. He established the Assumption Monastery and created the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos on the graves of the fallen warriors. Saint Dmitry reposed in the Lord on May 19, 1389, and was buried in the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin.
