David was the governor of Ephesus during the reign of Emperor Maximian. For refusing to give his daughter in marriage to the pagan emperor, he was stripped of honor and wealth, exiled to Melitene, and there beheaded. His daughter Callisthenia initially hid in Nicomedia, then moved to Thrace, where she healed the sick eyes of a woman’s daughter through prayer. After the death of Maximian, she returned to her homeland and told Queen Constance about herself. The queen received her and helped her regain her father's estate, which had been taken by Maximian. Callisthenia distributed the property to the poor, transferred her father's body to Asia, and built a church in his memory. She spent the remainder of her life in a God-pleasing manner and peacefully fell asleep in the Lord.
