During the second year of the reign of the wicked emperors Diocletian and Maximian, under the governors Tarquinius and Gavinius, evil was spread all over, leading to severe persecutions against Christians. A decree was issued commanding all people to worship the pagan gods. Many nations began offering sacrifices. Only three men remained steadfast in their faith, confessing the one true God and rejecting all idols. Tarquinius ordered their arrest. They were brought to the city of Dorostol, where they prayed fervently for the Lord’s help.
At their trial, Tarquinius and Gavinius questioned them about their refusal to make sacrifices as commanded. Saints Maximus, Dada, and Quintilian strongly declared that they would not venerate idols, for they were servants of Jesus Christ alone. Despite enduring long and cruel tortures, the saints remained unwavering in their faith.
Gavinius and Tarquinius decided to put them through even greater torments. Yet the saints rejoiced, awaiting the crowns of martyrdom. While imprisoned, they continued to pray. An angel appeared to them, bringing comfort and strength.
At the next trial, they again refused to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods. Enraged, Gavinius ordered that they be beheaded. Praying and glorifying God to the very end, the holy martyrs were taken to the village of Ozovia, where they received the crown of martyrdom.
Their holy passion occurred on April 28, during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian.
