Apostles of the Seventy Philemon and Archippus, and Martyr Apphia Equal-to-the-Apostles
Apostle
The memory of the holy apostles Archippus, Philemon, and Apphia is celebrated on November 22. Saint Archippus, one of the seventy apostles, was the bishop in Colossae after Saint Epaphras. Saint Philemon, a notable citizen of Colossae, believed in Christ and established a church in his home, where believers gathered. Saint Philemon was also a bishop and preached in Phrygia.
Saint Apphia, the wife of Philemon, served the Lord by welcoming believers and helping those in need. During the pagan festival in honor of Artemis, Saints Archippus, Philemon, and Apphia were captured by idolaters, subjected to torture, and died for their faith. Their martyrdom occurred during the reign of Emperor Nero.
