The Holy Apostle Apelles was a bishop in Smyrna and is mentioned by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans. Saint Luke, also mentioned by the Apostle Paul, was a bishop in Laodicea of Syria. Saint Clement, whom the Apostle Paul speaks of in his letter to the Philippians, was a bishop in Sardica.
