Holy Forty Women Martyrs and Martyr Ammon the Deacon, their teacher, at Heraclea in Thrace
Saints
The Forty Holy Virgins were from Adrianople of Macedonia. Through the teachings and grace of Saint Ammon, they came to believe in Christ.
The governor of the region, Bavdos, called them to trial and subjected them to horrific tortures in order to force them to worship the idols. With steadfast faith, they prayed to the true God. At that moment, the pagan priest suddenly fell dead. The persecutor then ordered that Saint Ammon be hanged and tortured. The holy virgins were likewise subjected to torment. Ten of them were cast into the fire, eight were beheaded together with their teacher, while the rest were put to death by sword and by other dreadful means.
