Archbishop
Saint Alexius (Orlov), Archbishop and Holy Martyr, was born on February 8, 1862, in the family of a Samara clergyman. He attended local theological schools and graduated from the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy. In August 1923, he was consecrated as Bishop of Bugulma, but soon fell into Renovationism and temporarily managed the schismatic Kuybyshev diocese in 1923-1924. From 1924 to 1927, he served in the Kurgan diocese, and from 1927 to 1931 in the Malmyzh, Enotaevka, and Syzran dioceses. In August 1931, he arrived for permanent service in Omsk, where he continued to serve until his arrest in April 1935. On October 25, 1935, he was exiled for five years to the town of Mirzoyan. He was arrested on May 15, 1937, and shot on August 27. He was glorified by the Archpastoral Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in the assembly of new martyrs and confessors of the Russian XX century from August 13 to 16, 2000.
