Alexander Mikhailovich Pokrovsky was born on August 14, 1879, in the village of Kazanovo, Ruza district of Moscow province. He received his education at the Volokolamsk Spiritual School and the Vifansk Spiritual Seminary. After completing his studies in 1905, he was ordained a priest at the Novo-Vasilievsk Church in the village of Vasilievskoe, where he served until his arrest on November 12, 1937. He was charged with counter-revolutionary agitation, for which he was convicted and sentenced to the highest measure of punishment. On November 27, 1937, he was shot at the Butovo firing range. On August 21, 2007, he was canonized as a saint.
