Saint Alexander Yaroslavich “Nevsky” was born on May 30, 1220, in Pereslavl (present-day Pereslavl-Zalessky in the Yaroslavl region). His father, Prince Yaroslav, ascended the throne of Novgorod in 1227. During this difficult period, Saint Alexander emerged as a warrior and defender of the Russian people. He achieved victory against the Swedes on July 15, 1240, at the Battle of the Neva River, from which he received the name “Nevsky.”
In 1241, he began reclaiming the territories surrounding Pskov, aiming for its complete liberation. In 1242, he defeated the Teutonic Knights in the famous battle fought on Lake Peipus (also known as Lake Chudskoye-Pskovskoye). The holy prince defended Russia against every enemy, including the Tatars. He was therefore recognized as the Grand Prince of all Russia.
Among his many accomplishments, he worked tirelessly to maintain peaceful relations with the Golden Horde, which he regarded as essential for the survival and prosperity of Russia. In 1263, he surrendered his soul to the Lord while staying at a monastery in Gorodets on the Volga River. His incorrupt relics were discovered and honored with great reverence, as his veneration as a saint began almost immediately after his burial.
The official glorification of Saint Alexander Nevsky took place in 1547 under Metropolitan Macarius. To this day, the Russian people continue to honor him as their protector and saint.
