Saint Alexander was born in the city of Vologda. He became a monk and lived an ascetic life near the abbot Dionysius. However, he wanted to avoid human glory and soon desired to withdraw, choosing to live in seclusion. With the blessing of his spiritual elder, he built a church in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos in the region of Kustkiy.
The princes of Yaroslavl, Dmitry and Simeon, learning of his ascetic life, hastened to assist him with the needs of the church. Princess Maria, the widow of Dmitry, granted him an entire village. The saint worked diligently, cultivating the land and gathering its fruits.
He lived for 60 years, 2 months, and 2 days, until he fell asleep in the Lord on June 9, 1439. He was of medium height, with a round face and gentle eyes, a thick, rounded beard, and dark gray hair.
On the same day, we also commemorate the Saints Theodora, Martha, and Maria, who were martyred in Persia in the year 346.
Additionally, it is also commemorated the repose of Saint Cyril, Abbot of Belozersk, who lived until 1427.
