Athanasius the Recluse Of the Kiev Caves
Venerable
Saint Athanasius the Hermit, having chosen a life of solitude, secluded himself in a cave to serve God in silence and to pray without ceasing. He labored in spiritual struggles and at the end of his life surrendered his spirit to God.
The Lord glorified him with the gift of healings, which Orthodox Christians receive through the prayers of the saint. His name is mentioned in the 4th song of the common canon of the saints of the Far Caves. In the 'Tale of the Lives of the Saints,' it is said that he did not need a candle in the cave, for he was illuminated by Heavenly light. To all who come to him with faith, he grants healing.
The memory of the saint is celebrated on August 28/September 10 and on the 2nd Sunday of Great Lent.
