Saint martyr Athanasius (in the world Alexey) was born on March 7, 1884, in the village of Suroshino, Tver province. He graduated from the church-parish school. On January 18, 1908, he entered the Valaam Monastery, where on February 21, 1914, he was tonsured into the mantle with the name Athanasius. He served in churches and was a clerk for Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky).
On April 24, 1921, he was ordained to the rank of hierodeacon, and soon after to the rank of hieromonk. In 1937, he was arrested and accused of terrorist agitation. During the interrogation, he confirmed that he provided financial assistance to repressed clergymen at the request of Metropolitan Sergius.
On August 19, 1937, the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR sentenced him to death by shooting with confiscation of property. On the same day, he was shot and buried in an unknown common grave.
