Saint Martyr Athanasius was born on January 18, 1899, in the village of Verkhniy Lyubazh, Kursk province. In 1923, he was ordained as a deacon, and in 1925 – as a priest. In 1933, his father was arrested for tax evasion and sentenced to three years. After his release, he served in various churches until he was arrested on September 11, 1937. He was accused of anti-Soviet activities but did not confess to any wrongdoing. On September 26, the NKVD troika sentenced him to death by shooting. Priest Athanasius was executed on October 9, 1937, and buried in an unmarked grave at the Butovo shooting range near Moscow.
