Adrian and Natalia of Nicomedia
Martyrs
Spouses Adrian and Natalia lived in the city of Nicomedia in the Bithynia region of Asia Minor. Adrian, a pagan and an official of Emperor Maximilian Galerius, became a Christian when he witnessed the courage of 23 believers who were being tortured for their faith. He declared that he too was a Christian, for which he was imprisoned.
Natalia, upon learning of his arrest, encouraged him to be courageous. When the Christians were sentenced to death, Adrian was temporarily released to go home, but Natalia did not let him in, fearing that he had renounced Christ. Returning to prison, Adrian, along with the martyrs, underwent severe tortures and died in 304.
After his death, Natalia prayed not to be forced to marry. Adrian appeared to her in a dream and said that she would soon follow him. Natalia passed away at his grave in the outskirts of the city of Byzantium, where his body was transferred.
