179 Holy Martyrs of Dau Penteli
Hosiomartyrs
The Holy Martyrs of the Pantokrator Monastery in Dahu-Pendeli suffered on Holy Pascha in the year 1680, when the monastery, a stronghold of Orthodoxy, was attacked by Algerian pirates. At that time, the brotherhood, gathered for continuous worship, was treacherously assaulted, and 179 monks were killed. The only survivor was a hieromonk who returned the next day to bury his brethren in a Christian manner.
The burial place of the martyrs remained unknown for almost 300 years until, in September 1965, during the restoration of the monastery, their relics were found, exuding a fragrant aroma. On August 14, 1992, the 179 Holy Martyrs were canonized, and their relics became accessible for veneration by the faithful, pouring forth blessings and miracles.
