1. Your stay in Mount Athos should be modest and respectful, as is customary in holy places.
2. Clothing plays a crucial role in Mount Athos. During church services, a specific dress code is desirable for all laymen; moreover, in some monasteries, such as St. Panteleimon or Vatopaidi monastery, it is required. All men should be wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and closed shoes. Sandals are allowed in the summer, but must be worn with socks. Sportswear should be avoided. The same rules apply to children.
3. Clergy are required to wear an undercassock (anteri) throughout their stay. During church services, wearing a cassock and headgear appropriate to your rank is mandatory. Closed shoes are preferred.
4. Mobile phones must be turned off during church services and the refectory.
5. Your presence in the church and the refectory during religious services should be as quiet and noise-free as possible.
6. Please, respect the schedule of the monasteries, sketes, and cells.
7. The use of TV, radio, and music-playing devices is strictly prohibited.
8. Smoking is prohibited almost throughout the whole territory of Mount Athos, except in specially designated areas.
9. Hunting, as well as the importation of weapons and dogs, are prohibited.
10. In order to prevent fires, exercise extreme caution when using lighters and flammable substances, especially in summer. Overnight camping in the forest, as well as any form of camping, is strictly prohibited.
11. Audio and video recording is prohibited on the territory of all monasteries, cells, kalyves, sketes, and any other dwellings of the monastic republic.
12. Photographing monks and the interior of buildings (churches, refectories, residential buildings) without special permission is prohibited.
13. A general type of Mount Athos permit (Genikon Diamonitirion) is usually issued for 4 days, with the right to stay in a monastery for one night. It is strongly recommended to inform the monastery of your intention to stay overnight in advance.
14. If you have a private type of permit (Idikon Diamonitirion)—a specific monastery's invitation—please refrain from seeking overnight stays in other monasteries of the monastic republic. This is a violation of the rules for receiving pilgrims on Mount Athos.
May the Holy Mother of God bless your pilgrimage and your entire life journey!
